In the harbour of Messina in September 1571, the water casks went aboard the Holy League galleys before the men did, bound for Lepanto. This is a slow chronicle of thirst and arithmetic aboard a Venetian galley, followed from the cooperage yards of Messina to the dim water of the Gulf of Patras on the seventh of October 1571. We sit on one bench with one oarsman, unnamed but documented, whose whole day was shaped by the copper measure carried twice along the gangway. Oak staves, vinegar in warm water, the azumbre and the bizcocho, the forzati, buonavoglia and schiavi, and the sound of hammers striking chains before the first gun. Told in low light, hour by hour, through the long night at Petala when lanterns swung on the sterns and stewards went among the wounded with the same shallow cups.
