"Smoking In Church" performed live in Kobe, Japan, during our July 2026 tour. Cut from footage captured on the road, this is the song as it lives on stage: louder, rawer, and shared with a room full of people on the other side of the world. The song explores the fear of raising children in a world that increasingly feels unstable, unequal, and emotionally cold. It was written from the perspective of trying to reconcile love and hope with systems and powers that often feel overwhelming and beyond individual control. The repeated phrase "Keep them warm" is the emotional center of the song. Warmth represents protection, compassion, emotional safety, and preserving humanity in a world that can often feel indifferent or hostile. "There might be mountains, but we are the rain" is the defining image of the track. The mountains represent massive, seemingly immovable forces: corruption, greed, concentrated power, exploitation, and systems that leave ordinary people feeling powerless. Rain, by contrast, appears soft and insignificant, yet over time it shapes landscapes, feeds rivers, and sustains life. Hearing that line sung back in a city so far from home only reinforced what the song is about: strength through persistence, care, and collective humanity. At its core, Smoking In Church is about the coexistence of hope and fear. No parent can fully protect their children from the world they inherit, but love, empathy, and human connection still matter deeply in the face of it.
