Aurangzeb Alamgir ruled one of the richest and most powerful empires in human history. At its height, the Mughal Empire stretched across almost the entire Indian subcontinent, governed nearly 150 million people and produced roughly a quarter of the world’s economic output. Yet in February 1707, the 88-year-old emperor lay dying in a military camp in the Deccan - exhausted, isolated and deeply uncertain about the future of the empire he had spent half a century expanding. Who was the real Aurangzeb? To some, he was a deeply religious, disciplined and incorruptible ruler who lived simply, refused to use the royal treasury for personal expenses and attempted to govern according to Islamic law. To others, he was an intolerant and ruthless emperor who destroyed temples, restored jizya, executed political and religious opponents and pushed the Mughal Empire towards collapse. This documentary moves beyond both extremes. We explore Aurangzeb’s brutal struggle for the Mughal throne, his war against Dara Shikoh, the imprisonment of Shah Jahan, his religious policies, the execution of Guru Tegh Bahadur, his conflict with Shivaji and the Marathas, and the exhausting Deccan campaigns that consumed the final 26 years of his life. Aurangzeb ultimately built the largest Mughal Empire ever seen, but the same discipline, determination and refusal to compromise that made him emperor may also have weakened the system he fought to preserve.
