Step through the ancient gateway of Dundrum Castle, where centuries of history rise above the County Down countryside. Built by the powerful Norman knight John de Courcy in the late 12th century, this striking hilltop fortress once guarded the routes into Lecale and commanded sweeping views toward Dundrum Bay and the Mourne Mountains. As we explore its weathered walls, towering keep and atmospheric ruins, imagine the soldiers, nobles and invaders who once walked these grounds. Every stone carries a story of ambition, conflict and survival. Join me on this immersive POV journey through one of Northern Ireland's most impressive medieval castles - and experience Dundrum as if you were walking through it yourself. 🏰 A Brief History of Dundrum Castle Norman Origins (c. 1177): Founded by the Anglo-Norman knight John de Courcy following his invasion of Ulster, Dundrum was built to dominate the Lecale peninsula and control land routes into the region. The Donjon (Keep): The striking, cylindrical stone keep—unusual for Irish castles of this era—was likely constructed around the early 13th century, featuring a spiral staircase and commanding 360-degree views stretching toward the Mourne Mountains and Dundrum Inner Bay. Centuries of Conflict: Over the centuries, control of the stronghold shifted between Anglo-Norman forces and local Gaelic chieftains, notably the Magennis clan, who held it during periods of the 15th and 16th centuries. The Blundell Era & Decline: In the 17th century, the castle was granted to the Blundell family, who built an L-shaped manor house on the grounds. It was later dismantled during the Cromwellian wars in 1652, leaving the romantic ruins we see today.
