Chicago Blues Reunion brings together a group of musicians whose shared history reaches back to the 1960s Chicago blues clubs where they first learned their craft — this performance captures that decades-deep connection, delivered live by men who helped carry Chicago blues to the world. About the Band Chicago Blues Reunion was formed by keyboardist Barry Goldberg, guitarist Harvey Mandel, singer-songwriter Nick Gravenites, and harmonica player Corky Siegel — joined over the years by fellow veterans including drummer Sam Lay and singer Tracy Nelson. All were part of a small circle of young musicians who, in the early 1960s, immersed themselves in Chicago's South and West Side blues clubs, learning directly from legends like Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, and Buddy Guy. Barry Goldberg was a fixture of the Chicago scene from his teenage years, going on to co-found the Barry Goldberg–Steve Miller Blues Band and later The Electric Flag alongside Mike Bloomfield. Harvey Mandel built a reputation as one of the most innovative electric guitarists of his generation. Nick Gravenites, often called "the Older Brother" of the Chicago blues-rock scene, penned the song "Born in Chicago" — later the title of a celebrated 2013 documentary chronicling this very musical lineage, narrated by Dan Aykroyd and featuring testimonials from Bob Dylan, Keith Richards, Carlos Santana, and Buddy Guy. Sam Lay, meanwhile, was a drumming legend who played behind both Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf during the genre's golden era. Reuniting in the mid-2000s after decades of individual careers, the band released the album and concert film Buried Alive in the Blues in 2005 — described by Goldberg with characteristic humor as "Spinal Tap for the geriatric set" — blending original material with Chicago blues standards and rare historical footage of the scene that shaped them all. About This Performance This concert captures Chicago Blues Reunion doing what they do best: playing the music that defined their youth with the seasoned chemistry of musicians who've known each other for over fifty years. It's a living link to the golden era of Chicago blues, performed by the men who helped carry it into rock and roll.
