Private credit explained: what it is, why everyday investors poured in, and why many of these funds only let about 5% of shares out each quarter. Told through Blue Owl, Blackstone's BCRED and Apollo, the 2026 rush for the exit, and the new push to put private credit into 401(k)s. Quick answers: • What is private credit? Funds that lend straight to companies, with no bank in the middle. Global regulators (FSB) put the market at $1.5 to $2 trillion. • Why can't investors get their money out? These funds aren't listed on the stock market. They buy back shares each quarter, usually capped at about 5% of all shares. When more people ask, everyone gets the same cut (pro rata). • Is private credit crashing? It depends who's counting. Default estimates range from under 2% (KBRA DLD index) to a record 6.3% (Fitch, 12 months to August 2026), partly because each counts differently. • Is private credit coming to 401(k)s? A 2025 executive order opened the door, and the Labor Department proposed a rule in March 2026. It isn't final. Key facts from the episode: • Blue Owl's "nine percent fund" (OBDC II) reported a 9.3% annualized net return since 2017, in its own filing. • Feb 2026: Blue Owl sold $1.4B of loans to four pension and insurance investors at 99.7 cents on the dollar, and that fund's regular quarterly withdrawals ended. • At one Blue Owl fund, investors asked for about 22% of shares; 5% was paid, about 23 cents per dollar asked. • Blackstone says investors who asked for everything in Q2 and Q3 2026 got back about 75% of what they requested. • Sep 2026: Cox Capital offered $20.65 a share for BCRED shares, 12.5% below Blackstone's own $23.60 value. BCRED's board urged shareholders to reject it. ⚠️ Education, not financial advice. We don't tell you what to buy, sell or hold, and we're not affiliated with any fund, broker or company shown. Blackstone's "about 75%" is cumulative over two quarters for someone who asked for everything both times. The "how long is the line" quarter road in the verdict is an illustration, our calculation.
