Walk down almost any older American street and you'll see them: houses built in the 1950s that are still standing strong seventy years later. Meanwhile, many new homes seem to show cracks, squeaks and problems within a few years. So were houses really built better back then — or does it only feel that way? In this documentary we compare a typical 1955 house with a typical 2026 house and look for the honest answer. The dense old-growth lumber and thick plaster walls of the postwar years. The simple floor plans and small crews that built them. The real problems those houses had — no insulation, outdated wiring, lead paint and asbestos — and why the ones we see today are only the survivors. Then what changed: faster construction, lighter materials, bigger houses on tighter budgets. And what modern homes genuinely do better. The answer is more surprising than most people expect. What year was your house built, and how has it held up? Tell us in the comments. We read every one. Subscribe to Old America for more stories about the brands, stores and places America grew up with.
