Narrated by Edward
Before dawn on a March morning in 1815, a woman comes quietly down the stairs of a red-brick cottage in Hampshire and sits down at the pianoforte. She is Jane Austen, and somewhere in a drawer are the last chapters of Emma.
Settle in for a slow, gentle story told in a deep, calm voice. We follow one ordinary day in the house she shared with her mother, her sister Cassandra and their friend Martha Lloyd: tea and toast in the dining parlour, quiet writing at a table no bigger than a tea tray, carts and coaches rattling past the corner, a spring walk up the lane to the Great House, needlework and reading aloud by the fire, and a letter to her niece Fanny by candlelight.
Everything in the day comes from the memories of Jane's family and from their letters, and where we can't be certain, Edward says so.
The story lasts about an hour, followed by soft rain and quiet firelight ambience, with the picture slowly dimming, to help you stay asleep.
Tip: turn off autoplay or set a sleep timer, so another video doesn't start and wake you.
