It’s the stuff of legend. With one tank, in 15-minutes, Michael Wittmann destroyed 29 Allied vehicles and halted the British advance at Villers-Bocage. It was a gift to Nazi propagandists, who wasted no time in championing the achievements of their “tank ace”. For the British, it was an embarrassing blow to military prestige. But was this truly the decisive victory that this has become known for? Or is there more to the story than one man who was in the right place at the right time?
