Want to make your fourth shots more aggressive?
In this CCC, I work with Brandon on his backhand roll so he can start taking more balls out of the air and putting pressure on opponents after their third-shot drop.
Brandon comes from a ping pong background, so he naturally wanted to use his wrist and manipulate the paddle face. But on his backhand roll, that was making the shot harder to time and repeat consistently.
We focused on:
• Adjusting his grip
• Anticipating the ball and preparing earlier
• Starting with the paddle tip down
• Getting low and staying low through contact
• Using the shoulder instead of manipulating the paddle with the wrist
• Extending through the ball for more depth
• Using the non-dominant arm to help create the rolling motion
One of the biggest differences was learning the relationship between spin and depth. Simply brushing up creates topspin, but extending through the ball allows Brandon to send that aggressive fourth deeper into the court.
The goal is a simple, repeatable motion: set the paddle, hold the paddle face, and extend through contact.
If you're letting too many fourth shots bounce or struggling to attack low drops out of the air, this breakdown will help you turn your backhand roll into a much more aggressive shot.
