Why did America replace the legendary Thompson submachine gun during World War II?
Known as the “Tommy Gun,” the Thompson became one of the most recognizable firearms of the 20th century. First developed after World War I, it gained fame during the Prohibition era before serving American troops during World War II.
But behind its legendary reputation were serious disadvantages. The Thompson was heavy, expensive to manufacture, and increasingly difficult to justify when the U.S. military needed weapons in enormous quantities.
In this episode of WAR TESTED, we explore the history of the Thompson submachine gun, from its original design to its battlefield service and eventual replacement by the cheaper M3 Grease Gun.
🔎 IN THIS VIDEO:
• Why John T. Thompson developed the weapon
• How the Thompson Model 1921 became famous
• The connection between the Tommy Gun and Prohibition-era gangsters
• How American soldiers used the Thompson during World War II
• Why the M1 and M1A1 models were simplified
• Why the U.S. military introduced the M3 Grease Gun
• What made the Thompson a legend despite its limitations
The Thompson was powerful, recognizable, and historically significant. But in a world war, reputation was not enough. The military needed weapons that could be produced quickly, economically, and in massive numbers.
So was the Thompson replaced because it was a bad weapon—or because the demands of war had changed?
Watch until the end to discover why one of America's most famous submachine guns gave way to a much simpler design.
