Jumped the bus from Los Cristianos to Plaza del Duque and had a wander around the shops and cafes i. the shopping centre. We then made our way to Playa del Duque beach and walked along the coastal walkway to the statue of Javier Pérez Ramos. Javier Pérez Ramos was a Spanish local hero who tragically lost his life on March 31, 1998, at the age of 31. While working on the coast of Tenerife, he drowned after successfully rescuing a tourist from treacherous waters. Background & The RescueThe Incident: On March 31, 1998, a tourist got into severe difficulty in the rough, high waves of the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Playa del Duque in Costa Adeje (Tenerife, Canary Islands). The Heroic Act: Ramos, who was working nearby, did not hesitate and swam out to successfully rescue the young lady. The Tragedy: Just after the rescue, a large wave struck, dragging Ramos out into the deep sea. His body was recovered eight days later.
