Welcome to a side of Alleppey (Alappuzha) that regular tourists never get to see! 🌴🚤 When people hear "Alleppey," they immediately picture luxury houseboats, touristy shikara rides, and crowded canals. But in this episode of Project 36, we skip the commercial traps and dive straight into the raw, authentic pulse of the backwaters. Did you know the word Alappuzha literally translates to the land where the sea meets the rivers? The British couldn't pronounce the Malayalam name, so they coined it Alleppey! The journey kicks off at Zero Point, where I hop on a boat to meet Jai Bro, an amazing local who actually lives right inside the Alleppey backwaters. He welcomes me into his home, hosts me with genuine Kerala hospitality, and takes me deep into the island community. We explore the world-famous, mind-boggling phenomenon of farming 2 meters below sea level—one of the only places on Earth where this happens! We uncover the ingenious engineering behind how water is kept out, how massive paddy crops are harvested, and how tonnes of grains are moved along narrow canals on traditional wooden boats to reach the main road. Along the way, we walk village bunds, try striking up conversations with elderly locals (dealing with some hilarious and heartwarming language barriers!), and witness daily life where waterways replace roads. To wrap up this unforgettable day, Jai Bro, two friends, and I head out into the vast open lake right at golden hour.
