The Tamil Nadu Secretariat has a fascinating history of its own — one that spans more than a century and reflects the changing political and administrative history of the state.
From its early days in the late 19th century to its present home at Fort St George, the seat of government in Tamil Nadu has moved through several locations and buildings. Over the years, different buildings have served as the centre of administration, while plans for new Secretariat complexes have repeatedly emerged with changing governments and changing needs.
In this video, we trace the history of the Tamil Nadu Secretariat from 1896 to 2026 — looking at where the government functioned, how the Secretariat evolved, the story of the present Secretariat at Fort St George, and the major attempts to create a new administrative complex.
We also look at the latest proposal for a new Secretariat at Pattinapakkam and what it could mean for the future of Tamil Nadu's seat of government.
From colonial Madras to modern Tamil Nadu, this is the story of how the state's administrative headquarters moved, changed and evolved over more than 125 years.
