One of the most expensive addresses in Canada — 700 feet of glass and steel, a five-star hotel stacked beneath $200 million of private estates. And for two years, pieces of it kept falling into the street below. Not bolts. Not construction debris. Sheets of glass, breaking loose from the balconies sixty stories up and dropping onto one of the busiest sidewalks in the city. In September 2013, one came down twenty-three floors and hit a man walking below.
In this video, we go inside Toronto's Shangri-La — a $430 million luxury tower on University Avenue that started raining glass on the people beneath it barely three months after opening. From a flaw smaller than a grain of salt, hidden inside the glass since the day it was made, to the city order that banned residents from their own balconies — we break down why a brand-new, world-class building couldn't be made to stop shedding itself onto the street, and why nobody could predict which pane would go next.
You can buy a five-star view. You can't negotiate with a flaw you chose not to look for.
