How to summarize a 40-page PDF with AI and actually understand it, using free tools: NotebookLM (now Gemini Notebook), ChatGPT Free and Claude. Five copy-paste prompts map the reading, explain it section by section and quiz you, so you study the reading instead of skipping it. Short answer: don't ask AI to summarize your 40-page reading and stop there. Have it map the reading, explain one section at a time, check its own quotes and quiz you, then write the summary yourself. Framed as learning: use AI to understand an assigned reading, never to do graded work for you. Don't turn in AI's words as your reading response, and follow your syllabus and class AI policy. WHAT'S COVERED 1) Why a summary alone isn't studying (Dunlosky et al., 2013: summarization rated low utility, practice testing high) 2) Free tools that open a long PDF: Gemini Notebook (formerly NotebookLM), ChatGPT Free, Claude, the Gemini app 3) Skim, map, explain one section at a time, check the quotes, quiz yourself 4) A two-day plan for a 40-page reading 💲 Free-plan limits quoted are from each company's help pages, checked Oct 26, 2026. Limits change, so check before you rely on one. 📋 PROMPTS FROM THIS VIDEO (copy and paste) 3:56 Prompt 1 — Map the reading Here is a long reading for my class. Do not summarize it yet. Give me a map: the main sections in order, with page numbers, and one line on what question each section is trying to answer. Then list the 8 to 10 key terms I need to know, with the page where each first appears. If you are not sure of a page number, say so. 4:50 Prompt 2 — Explain one section Explain pages [X to Y] of this reading to me like a tutor. Start with the main point in two sentences. Then give the argument or steps in order, with the page number for each point. Define any key terms in plain language. Only use what is in the reading. If the reading doesn't say something, tell me instead of filling the gap. 5:38 Prompt 3 — Check my summary Here is my own summary of pages [X to Y]. Compare it with the reading. Tell me what I got right, what I got wrong and what important point I left out, with page numbers. Do not rewrite my summary for me. 6:26 Prompt 4 — Show me the quote For each point in your last answer, quote the exact sentence from the reading that supports it and give the page number. If you can't find a supporting sentence, mark the point as not supported. 7:05 Prompt 5 — Quiz me on the reading Quiz me on this reading, one question at a time. Mix recall questions with why and how questions. Wait for my answer before you continue, and don't show the answer until I try. After each answer, tell me which page to reread if I got it wrong. At the end, list the topics I missed.
