No temples on the itinerary, no tuk tuk offers, no selfie spots. Just Bangkok living its actual life. The difference is immediately felt. Quieter in some ways, more intense in others the heat is the same but the pace is different, the sounds are different, the food is cheaper and better and being eaten by people who eat it every day. Kids on bicycles, elderly men playing cards outside shophouses, women buying vegetables from the same vendor they've bought from for twenty years. This is what the city actually looks like when nobody is performing it for outsiders. Bangkok (กรุงเทพมหานคร) is the capital of Thailand with a population of around 11 million people, one of the most visited cities on earth yet most of its visitors never leave a handful of tourist districts that make up a tiny fraction of the city's actual geography. The vast majority of Bangkok is residential, local, and completely off the radar of international tourism dense low-rise neighbourhoods of shophouses, markets, temples serving local communities, and street food operating on a price point that assumes the customer lives nearby.
