It emerged from the oral tradition of enslaved African Americans in the nineteenth-century American South, carrying a deep cry: *Lord, remember me*. The words echo the prayer of the crucified man in Luke 23:42 and express hope, dignity, and trust in God in the midst of suffering. The song later travelled through African American churches, gospel communities, Sunday schools, and Christian hymnals, with many musical and lyrical variations. In this rendition, we offer the song as a shared prayer across cultures and generations. May its old words remind us that God’s memory embraces the forgotten, the suffering, and the hopeful, and that faith can still find a voice in every place and every people.
