In 1882, Boss Spearman and his trusted cowhands Charley Waite, Mose, and young Button travel across the Montana frontier, driving their cattle freely across the open range. They prefer a quiet life away from violence, but their journey brings them into a town controlled by a ruthless rancher who believes he owns everything around him. When Mose rides into town for supplies, he is brutally attacked and arrested by the corrupt local marshal. Boss and Charley soon discover that the violence is no accident. Powerful rancher Denton Baxter wants the free-grazing cowmen driven from the territory and will use intimidation, hired guns, and the law to get what he wants. After taking the injured Mose to a local doctor, Charley meets Sue Barlow, a kind and determined woman who sees something in him that he has tried to leave behind. Their growing connection gives Charley a reason to imagine a different future, even as the conflict with Baxter becomes increasingly dangerous. When Baxter's men cross a line that cannot be ignored, Boss and Charley are forced to confront their violent pasts.
