On the night of September 29, 1913, Rudolf Diesel, the inventor of the revolutionary engine that bears his name, disappeared from a passenger ship crossing the English Channel. His cabin was empty. His bed had not been slept in. His coat and hat were neatly folded on the deck railing. Ten days later, a badly decomposed body was found near the mouth of the River Scheldt. A few personal belongings were recovered. The body was returned to the sea. No autopsy. No definitive answer. *Was it suicide, an accident, or murder?* In this documentary, we examine the evidence behind the three main theories and separate documented facts from decades of speculation. But the mystery of Diesel's death is only part of the story. Born into a struggling family, Rudolf Diesel became one of the most influential inventors of the industrial age. He wanted to create an engine so efficient, compact and affordable that even a small village workshop could use it. Instead, his invention transformed factories, ships, trucks and eventually passenger cars. We also explore the surprising history of the diesel engine after its inventor's death, including the crucial role played by Bosch in making it practical for road vehicles. And finally, we visit an unusual memorial in Augsburg: a garden built by a Japanese industrialist for a man who has no known grave. What really happened to Rudolf Diesel? The evidence points in certain directions, but the final answer remains out of reach. What do you think happened that night?
