If your chords sound basic, it’s likely because you are starting on the wrong side of the chord. Most of the time our attention is directed to the bottom note of a chord because that is what gives it its name. Although this note is important, it keeps our awareness anchored to the bottom. Often times when building chord progressions, if your focus is on the root of the chord, you get into the roman numeral mindset, 1 4 5 6 and so forth. When thinking this way, the actual notes of the chord above the root become an afterthought. Generally, the lower the note is in the vertical stack of the chord, the less colorful it is when we think of it from a harmonic melodic point of view.
