What's It All For?

WHAT’S IT ALL FOR? “What’s It All For?” is an original Christian song about the things we spend our lives chasing—and the question of what ultimately gives life purpose and meaning. I first wrote the lyrics to “What’s It All For?” in a graduate-school poetry class, when I was a young husband and father of four. Parenting had begun to change the way I looked at life. I was starting to see just how powerfully my Christian worldview conflicted with some of the intoxicating priorities the world puts before us. This song isn’t meant as a condemnation of anyone chasing those things. It was—and still is—a wake-up call to myself. As a Christian man, husband, father, author, and teacher, I didn’t want to wake up someday and realize I’d spent my life pursuing things that ultimately didn’t matter. The heart of the song, for me, comes in Verse 3: “Blinding you to purpose and meaning, God’s will for your life.” I think of God as a lighthouse, shining through all the distractions and competing voices, helping us chart a course toward a life that matters. If this song causes someone to stop for a moment and ask, “What am I living for? What really matters?”—then it has done what I hoped it would do.
