In the canon timeline of A Song of Ice and Fire, Lord Hoster Tully stayed at Riverrun during his final years. He never traveled north to Winterfell, where his eldest daughter Catelyn ruled as lady, and he never saw his northern grandchildren. What if the Lord of the Trident took to the Kingsroad in the depths of winter? Under a frosted blue banner, his carriage rolls through the snowy wolfswood to Winterfell's gates. Outriders bring casks of river wine and sweet cakes from the south. Inside the carriage, the old lord sits wrapped in furs, determined to reach the Great Hall hearth before his strength fails him.
His brother Brynden the Blackfish and his heir Edmure ride beside him. Southern manners meet northern ways at the Great Midwinter Feast. Sansa arranges pine garlands along the high tables, while Arya rummages through the Tully baggage wagons. Near the hearth, Bran listens to the old lord tell stories of the Trident. Later, in the solar, Ned Stark and Lord Hoster speak behind closed doors. What passes between them when the talk turns to Jon Snow, who watches from the cold courtyard below?
The Midwinter feast brings river and snow together under one roof. Stark and Tully share bread and counsel for the hard years ahead. Outside, snow piles deep against the granite walls. Inside, flagons of spiced ale pass between old friends, and red embers glow on the hearth as the winter wind rises.
