Ne Quittez Pas — the night Paris is liberated, 24 to 25 August 1944, and a young telephone operator at the central exchange on the rue des Archives keeps the city's lines open through the gunfire and the rumours, while her fiancé holds a barricade somewhere on the Left Bank. A thousand lamps blinking on the switchboard, "allô, ne quittez pas" said a hundred times an hour, the headset pressed down over her hair, Jean on the barricade with no way to call her, a mother searching for Montparnasse, a German voice suddenly on the line, the whole city holding its breath, the tanks reaching the Hôtel de Ville, every bell in Paris ringing at once, the Marseillaise carried down the wires to anyone who picks up, a line cut in the middle of a sentence, snipers on the rooftops, his number dialled again and again, warm rain over the Marais, a stranger's voice asking for someone who is gone, the question of whether he is still alive, Madame Arnaud closing her eyes at the far end of a line — and the dawn of the twenty-fifth of August, one more light on the board, and his voice saying: allô, c'est moi. The set plays through twice, so put it on and leave it running. No talking, no ads inside the mix, no interruptions. Sung in French: soprano over strings, grand piano, soft harp and distant bells.
