Celebrating Granny Nanny of the Maroons

Jamaica, National Heroes’ Day is observed on the third Monday in October. It honours seven Jamaican national heroes including Nanny of the Maroons. For the Maroon community of her legacy especially in Moore Town (formerly New Nanny Town) in Portland Parish they have local commemorations of her leadership. “… on the annual Jamaican observance of National Heroes Day in mid-October, locals celebrate Nanny Day, commemorating the founder of their community.” Thus while “Granny Nanny Day” may not be the official name of a national public holiday, there is a dedicated day of remembrance tied to her on or around National Heroes’ Day.
