America’s secret weapon entered the Pacific War on January 5, 1943, when a five-inch shell with a radio inside shot down a Japanese dive bomber off Guadalcanal. It was the VT proximity fuze — a radar small enough to survive 20,000 g — and Japan never found a counter to it. This documentary traces the fuze from the Tizard Mission and Merle Tuve’s Section T to the USS Helena’s three salvos, the Great Marianas Turkey Shoot in June 1944 — where Japan lost nearly 600 aircraft against 123 — and the kamikaze fires of Okinawa. It names the carriers Taiho, Shokaku and Hiyo, the submarines Albacore and Cavalla, Task Force 58, and the VT-fuzed gun line that ended the Imperial Japanese Navy’s carrier air arm. Built from after-action reports, loss tables and squadron records — not the legends.
