Central State Hospital in Milledgeville, Georgia, was once the world's largest mental institution, housing up to 14,000 patients at its peak. After decades of abandonment, its history is being carefully preserved and shared.
I sat down with Jessica Whitehead - historian, author of Seeking Asylum, and director of the Central State Hospital Museum - to discuss the hospital's history, the evolution of mental health treatment, and what the future holds for this massive abandoned campus.
Inside the Central State Hospital Museum, Jessica has created a powerful photography gallery documenting the hospital's 150+ year legacy and the lives of those who walked these halls.
