Chapter 124 – SHENZHEN to YANGSHUO by HIGH-SPEED TRAIN The day after arriving in Shenzhen, we enjoyed a great dinner at the recently opened Meat Steak House restaurant, starting with a very fresh mixed fruit salad, followed by a steak platter with grilled vegetables and a pasta dish. The next morning, we made our way to the vast Shenzhen North high speed railway station, for our high-speed train trip to Yangzhou in the Guilin region. We were hungry so we headed upstairs to Dicos chicken to eat lunch, where I ordered one of their delicious pineapple chicken burgers. After lunch it was time to board our train to Yangzhou. The sleek train awaited us on the platform. The most luxurious seats on the train are in ‘Business class’, which has lie-flat seats. The next option is First Class with wider 2–2 configuration seats. Most of the seats on the train are second-class in a 3-2 configuration. Some people even purchase Standing Room tickets. The trains are equipped with clean airplane style vacuum toilets in every car. Our second-class tickets cost us ¥255 yuan each. The train traveled along between stations at between 240 to 300 kilometer per hour. Soon the unusual ‘casts’ (limestone Hills) typical of the Li Jang river area started to appear. About 2 and a half hours later, we arrived at Yangzhou station, where the train only stopped for a few minutes to allow for disembarking and embarking. We took a taxi from the station to our hotel, passing many more of the casts, past the Guilin Romance Park, to reach our hotel which had this fabulous view from our balcony. The hotel offered a tempting swimming pool, so I had a quick swim.
