On the first Monday in March, Nizhny Novgorod volleyball players hosted their rivals from Orenburg on their home court. For both teams, the match was crucial in the fight for a ticket to the next stage. Captain Alexander Pyatyrkin did not participate in the ASK due to damage. And the start of the meeting was overshadowed by an injury to the captain of the guests, Ilya Spodobets, who was replaced by Dmitry Kudryashov.
The opening set turned out to be the longest in the match. The teams did not let each other go far in the score, alternately taking the lead. But the guests were the first to reach the set, after an accurate diagonal attack by Mikhail Khlyakin – 24:22. ASK responded with an effective diagonal attack by Pavel Zheleznyakov, after which the guests' mentor Pavel Borsch took a break. Alexander Grabenkov knocked out a passing ball with a serve, and then in the final game Zheleznyakov powerfully shot from the 2 zone, hitting libero Maxim Maksimenko in the face – 24:24. A struggle ensued for the difference of two goals, in which Orenburg was greatly hampered by three own losses in a row. After the game, Sergey Nikitin, with an attack from the block, brought ASK ahead, and in the very next episode, Khlyakin sent the ball into the out after the attack – 31:29 in favor of the hosts.
The equal game continued in the second game, which also led to an equal ending at 23:23. It was at this score that Maxim Titov, who was blocking ASK, closed the attack with a single block by Artyom Alexandrov's first tempo. And in the very next moment, Zheleznyakov blocked Khlyakin's attack, sending the teams into the third set – 25:23.
In the third game, the guests were able to impose a fight until the score was 12:12, when the Nizhny Novgorod team took the lead on Nikitin's serves – 15:12. It was after this breakthrough that Andrei Dranishnikov's wards were able to score points both from the reception and in the final games, which brought them closer to victory. This allowed the ASK coach to release Viktor Nikonenko, a blocker, to the court at 23:18, who, although he did not score points, definitely pleased the local fans, who greeted his exit with a standing ovation. Zheleznyakov brought the final point to his team, accurately shooting from the first zone – 25:21.
