Two thirds of Tuscany is hills and a quarter is mountains. The floor of Siena Cathedral is made of 56 marble inlay panels, and the Facciatone was meant to be the facade of a new cathedral until the Black Death and structural problems stopped the work. The Leaning Tower of Pisa began to lean at the third storey; a pause of almost a hundred years let the ground settle, and between 1990 and 2001 it was straightened by 45 cm. Brunelleschi raised the dome of Florence Cathedral without wooden centering, and 463 steps climb between its two shells to the lantern.
