Living on the Mekong: How Families Eat, Sleep and Work on the Water

What is it really like living on the Mekong River? We spend time with local families to see how they eat, sleep, work, cook, bathe and make a living on the water. From fishing and collecting river snails to working on boats and sharing meals together, this is everyday family life on Vietnam’s Mekong. The Mekong is much more than a river for the people who live here. It can be a road, a workplace, a source of food, and sometimes even part of the home itself. In this documentary, we travel along Vietnam’s Mekong Delta and meet ordinary people whose daily lives are closely connected to the water. We watch fishermen pull fish from the river, meet a family that collects and prepares snails to sell, and see larger barges transporting tractors, excavators and other heavy equipment. But the most interesting moments are often the simplest ones. We step onto a family boat to see what everyday life looks like inside. The father takes care of steering, machinery and heavier work. Nearby, family members prepare food, rest together during lunch, wash, cook and continue their daily routines only a few feet above the river.
