“When Johnny Comes Marching Home” (sometimes referred to as “When Johnny Comes Marching Home Again”) is an American patriotic song dated from the American Civil War. It was written by the Irish-American bandleader Patrick Gilmore, and its first publication was in the year of 1863, back when he used the pseudonym “Louis Lambert”. The song was said to have been written for Gilmore’s sister Annie as she prayed for the safe return of her fiancé, Union Light Artillery Captain John O'Rourke, from the Civil War, but later outgrew its original purpose and became an immensely popular song expressing people's longing for the return of their friends and relatives who were fighting in the war. During the American Civil War, the song was sung by both the Union and the Confederate soldiers, and as of now, remains one of the most famous American patriotic songs of all time. It is also sung to the same tune as "Johnny I Hardly Knew Ye", however it is not clear which song was written first.
