00:00:00 Introduction
00:20:00 Gameplay Begins
ROUTINE has been telling us what it’s about from the beginning — I just don’t think I understood the symbol yet.
The hollyhock keeps appearing throughout this story, and by the end, it feels like more than just a flower. It represents the same pattern we’ve been watching play out over and over again: life, death, renewal, continuation.
In other words, the hollyhock is almost the routine itself.
That makes ROUTINE such a perfect name for this game. Humans arrive on the Moon, study it, build on it, become comfortable there, and eventually start treating something ancient and natural like it belongs to them. But underneath all of that technology, the same process keeps moving forward.
People die. Something else continues.
Entity B is killed by something as ordinary and human as an apple. Humans are infected by something their bodies were never equipped to survive. The robots keep carrying out their programming long after everything has fallen apart. And through all of it, the Moon — and whatever was already living there — remains.
The hollyhock looks soft and beautiful against this horrible landscape, but that contrast is exactly what makes it work. It packages something brutal inside something beautiful: death becoming life, life returning to death, and the process beginning again.
Full bloom.
The routine continues.
This is the finale of my ROUTINE playthrough, but I am definitely not done with this story. I’ll be doing a deeper lore video after the ending to connect the Apollo timeline, the Canal, Entity A and B, William, the infection, the hollyhocks, and what I think the game is ultimately saying about humanity’s need to understand, control, and possess things that were never ours in the first place.
If you’ve been following the playthrough, thank you for going down this rabbit hole with me. Like the video, subscribe to mothercharged, and tell me your interpretation of the hollyhocks and the ending in the comments.
