Our forefathers believed that on All Hallows Eve, the veil between the living and dead grew thin. That the dead, both good and bad, under certain circumstances, could pass through this veil. They dressed in scary costumes and carved Jack o’lanterns to ward off evil spirits. On this night, they also celebrated the final harvest, and paid homage and remembrance to their ancestors by lighting candles and preparing special food and drink. These traditions continue into the present day.
Chorus
Oh the veil is thin this time of year
The voices of the old ones draw near
Through mist and moonlight, through dark within
The dead walk beside us when the veil grows thin
Verse 1
The light is changing, the leaves turn gold
Whispers of autumn breathe dark and cold
Few steadfast leaves cling tight to the boughs
While the wind sings a dirge through the bare limbs now
They tumble and dance down the mountainside
Where roots of ancients and shadows reside
They crackle like secrets beneath our feet
While the scent of apple on the air is sweet
Chorus
Oh the veil is thin this time of year
As the voices of the old ones draw near
Through mist and moonlight, through dark within
The dead walk beside us when the veil grows thin
Bridge
So light a candle, let the songs begin
For the wheel keeps turning and us within
From the seed to the harvest, from loss to birth
We are bound to the heavens, the sky and the earth
Verse 2
All Hallows Eve on wings of night
With silver moon rising pale and bright
We burn a candle for those gone before
For those who stand just beyond death's door
For grandmother's wisdom for grandfather's lore
For the names that we whisper, for the souls we adore
Leave room at the table, remembrance begins
For the ancestors gather when the veil grows thin.
Chorus
Oh the veil is thin this time of year
As the voices of the ancient ones draw near
Through mist and moonlight, through dark within
The dead walk beside us when the veil grows thin
