A slow-moving nor'easter stuck off the North Carolina coast has battered the Outer Banks since Saturday, October 17, 2026. The ocean has washed over side streets from Mirlo Beach through Rodanthe, gusts reached 62 mph at Jennette's Pier in Nags Head, and buoys offshore measured waves of about 17 feet. Visitors have been ordered off Hatteras Island and all ferries to Ocracoke are suspended. The National Weather Service expects water levels through Thursday to run higher than anything so far, with the worst likely on Wednesday. In this video: Overwash in Rodanthe and Mirlo Beach, and the oceanfront houses at risk Fact check: has any house collapsed? Is Highway 12 closed? Why this nor'easter is stuck off the coast Buoy waves, wind gusts and water levels at Duck and Hatteras Ocracoke cut off: no ferries, residents could be stranded for days Flooding risk from Virginia Beach to the New Jersey shore Forecast: coastal flood warning until Wednesday night This is an educational summary, not an official forecast.
