Guimarães: The Birthplace of Portugal 🛡️🇵🇹
Welcome to Guimarães, the historic "Cradle of the Nation." It was here in the 12th century that Afonso Henriques, the first King of Portugal, was born and the foundation of the country was laid. Walking through this UNESCO World Heritage city feels like stepping back into a medieval fairytale.
In this video, we’re exploring the stone-walled streets where Portugal began and discovering why Guimarães is the pride of the Minho region.
📍 Must-See Locations:
Castelo de Guimarães: This 10th-century fortress is the ultimate symbol of Portuguese resistance and independence. We’re climbing the keep for incredible views and walking the same ramparts where kings once stood.
Paço dos Duques de Bragança (Palace of the Dukes): A striking 15th-century manor house known for its unique northern European-inspired architecture and its many brick chimneys. Inside, you’ll see massive tapestries, armor, and grand banqueting halls that feel straight out of a movie.
Largo da Oliveira: The heart of the old town. This beautiful square is home to the Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Oliveira and the Padrão do Salado, a unique Gothic shrine built to commemorate a 14th-century battle victory.
Rua de Santa Maria: One of the oldest and most atmospheric streets in the city, connecting the upper castle district with the lower town. It’s lined with traditional granite houses and wrought-iron balconies.
Monte da Penha: We’re taking the teleférico (cable car) up to the summit of the Penha mountain. It’s a peaceful sanctuary filled with giant boulders, hidden grottos, and the best panoramic view of the entire city.
✨ The Spirit of "Aqui Nasceu Portugal"
As you walk by the old city walls, you’ll see the famous inscription: "Aqui Nasceu Portugal" (Portugal was born here). From the Romanesque Igreja de São Miguel (where it’s believed the first king was baptized) to the lively Praça de Santiago, Guimarães is a city that honors its past while being one of the most charming places to visit today.
