Engaged in THREE Days. Her Son Loved Her From a Distance. She Died in DEBT: Jennie Jerome The museum cards tell a simple story. A rich girl from Brooklyn married an English lord, gave birth to Winston Churchill, and spent her life as a famous beauty in London. The letters tell a different one. In August 1873, at a ball on a guard ship off the Isle of Wight, nineteen-year-old Jennie Jerome met Lord Randolph Churchill. Three days later they were engaged. Her son grew up begging her, in letter after letter, to visit him at school, and decades later wrote that he loved her dearly, but at a distance. She married three times. Her second husband was sixteen days older than Winston, and a play she wrote brought the woman who took him from her. When she died in 1921, her debts were larger than everything she owned. It ended with a pair of new shoes.
