#jan #dismas #zelenka #score #sheetmusic #zwv #zwv98 Autograph score of Zelenka's psalm setting "Memento Domine David", /Z. 98/. Zelenka composed his third psalm cycle for Vespers in around 1728 to complete the 'Psalmi Vespertini, totius anni': 33 psalm settings that could be combined for any occasion throughout the liturgical year. It seems to have been a well conceived project. He started them in 1725, possibly after being inspired by a Court pilgrimage to Graupen (Krupka). Sadly, only 23 psalms remain from the original 33. Weekly Vespers services in Dresden usually included the music of not just one composer, but multiple. Zelenka amassed a huge collection of settings by Italian and Bohemian composers in order to fulfil this demand. JD Heinichen, GA Ristori and T Butz also had Vespers responsibilities. In Memento Domine David, Zelenka reflects the text movingly. The first movement uses great use of a sweet-sounding ritornello theme. It is modulated through various tonalities, eventually brought back to the tonic. The other movements show a nice variety, with a blend of fugal and dramatic elements. It concludes on an emotional Gloria Patri, and an uplifting Sicut Erat-Amen fugue.
