A funeral march you recognise in seconds. Now imagine it filling a vast church: deep organ pedals, towering chords and a real tolling bell. Stay for the quiet trio at 2:17—its fragile melody makes the return of the march feel even darker. Chopin wrote the Funeral March in 1837, before completing the rest of his B-flat minor Piano Sonata, Op. 35, in 1839. The sonata was first published in 1840, with the march as its third movement. The music was written for piano; this recording gives it a new organ setting. The sombre procession opens into a tender central trio before the march returns. Here, the bell falls silent for that central passage, leaving the melody suspended in the church acoustic. Chapters 0:00 The bell and the march 1:03 First surge 2:17 A fragile moment of light 3:34 The trio unfolds 6:05 The march returns 7:08 Final rise and tolling bell Our vision We wanted the familiar march to feel monumental and the trio almost weightless: the same musical journey, carried by the organ's sustained breath. • Arrangement: We adapted all 108 performed bars of the movement for one organist, two manuals and pedal, choosing contrasting registrations for the march and trio. • Performance: We programmed the phrasing, articulation and slower tempo map, with a gently wavering flute colour for the central melody. • Sound: We balanced sampled organ registers with 10 strikes of a recorded church bell and the measured acoustic response of Kalvträsk church.
