What goes into building a 28-acre Arabica coffee farm in Uganda? Welcome to Guga Mas, in Nabunyifu, in the Mbale region of Eastern Uganda.
In Episode 1, we explore the work taking place across our 16 coffee blocks, home to approximately 18,000 coffee trees and 45,000 stems. From compost preparation and soil testing to pruning and plans for gravity-fed water distribution, this is a look at the everyday work behind the farm.
In this episode:
• Preparing compost using coffee husks, manure and other materials available on the farm
• Sampling soil across the coffee blocks with a government soil technician
• Pruning coffee trees to manage their height, structure and productive stems
• Using coloured markers to identify the blocks and track work
• Exploring how the land’s natural slope could help distribute water
• Meeting the team and sharing muchomo after the work
We’re documenting the process as it happens: the experiments, the challenges, what works and what needs to change. There’s plenty still to learn and we’ll be sharing that journey here.
