Planters Cheez Balls: The Snack Fans Wouldn't Let Stay Dead

In 2006, Planters pulled Cheez Balls — the neon-orange, marble-sized, cheese-flavored puffed-corn snack that had been a snack-aisle fixture since the 1980s — off shelves for good. No recall, no scandal, no official explanation. Just gone. Except fans didn't let it stay gone. For the next twelve years, Facebook groups, forum threads, letters to corporate, and a change.org petition kept the pressure on, until June 26, 2018, when the official Mr. Peanut account hid 59 Cheez Balls canisters across random eBay and Craigslist listings — a scavenger hunt fans solved in under 24 hours. The next day, Kraft Heinz confirmed it: Cheez Balls and Cheez Curls were coming back, starting July 1, for a limited time, at $1.99 a can. This video traces the whole arc, verified against the original 2018 Kraft Heinz press release, the 2020 Business Wire flavor-launch announcement, Hormel's 2021 acquisition press release, and Planters' own current FAQ page — including the parts most retrospectives gloss over. The comeback sold out fast, and empty commemorative cans went for nearly $450 on eBay. In February 2020, Planters doubled down with four new flavors, and headlines called it back "for good." Then, sometime after Hormel acquired the Planters brand in 2021 for $3.35 billion — a deal that explicitly named Cheez Balls as one of the assets changing hands — the product quietly disappeared from shelves again, with no announcement at all. Planters' own FAQ confirms it: discontinued in 2006, limited return in 2018, currently not available. We also address, honestly, what nobody can pin down: the exact year Cheez Balls originally launched (commonly cited as 1981, but sources don't fully agree), and the official reason it was cut in 2006 in the first place (no company has ever said, on the record).
