A plant stays rooted in one place, yet new plants can appear across a path, beside a fence or far from the parent. How does that happen, and what could carry a fluffy dandelion fruit, a hooked burr and a coconut? Make a guess, then follow the journeys. Moving seeds away from where they formed is called seed dispersal. Sometimes the travelling object is a seed, sometimes a whole fruit with a seed inside, and different shapes can help with different journeys. Wind can carry a dandelion fruit with its feathery parachute, and maple fruits have wings that help them spin as they fall. Hooked burrs may catch on fur, birds can eat fleshy fruits and carry some seeds elsewhere, and some animals bury seeds and leave a few uneaten. Water carries some fruits, including coconuts that can float; other seeds fall nearby, some plants fling seeds from opening fruits, and gardeners move seeds as well. Travelling farther can reduce crowding, but a successful journey needs more than movement: a seed on dry concrete may never establish a plant. The plant does not choose a destination, and a seed does not need to know where it is going. Generic plants, birds and animals stand for a type, not a named species. Journeys are examples of possible routes, not guaranteed outcomes and not a complete list; the paths are computed from simple rules (a fixed wind field, simple waves, ballistic arcs) with no distances, speeds or times claimed. Arrows, rings, wind lines and crosses are notation, not objects. The dandelion, the maple and the coconut are whole fruits; the bean seed is a bare seed. Cultivated bean pods are not claimed to explode: the flinging pod is a generic pod, not a bean pod. Cutaway and enlarged parts are simplified and not to scale.
