She Fell 10,000 Feet and Survived 11 Days in the Amazon — Juliane Koepcke's True Survival Story

On Christmas Eve 1971, a 17-year-old girl was the only survivor of LANSA Flight 508 over the Peruvian rainforest. Alone, injured and half-blind, she followed a stream through the Amazon for eleven days. This is the true story of how she walked out — and why the jungle that nearly killed her was the kind of forest she called home. Juliane Koepcke was 17 when LANSA Flight 508 broke apart in a thunderstorm on 24 December 1971. The Juliane Koepcke story is a true survival story like no other: she fell about 3 km, still strapped to her row of seats, and lived. Years later, Juliane Koepcke became a biologist and went back to protect the same rainforest. This true survival story is told as it happened, from her memoir and the investigation.
