Most manufacturing problems don’t begin on the production floor. They begin much earlier — while the product is still on an engineer’s screen. Design for Manufacturability (DFM) brings manufacturing experience into the product development process before tooling is built and production begins. At Talan Products, we work with engineers and sourcing teams to identify opportunities to reduce manufacturing cost, simplify assembly, improve material utilization, increase reliability, and create a more efficient manufacturing process. Sometimes that means converting a machining operation to high-speed progressive die stamping. Sometimes it means improving material utilization or simplifying an assembly. And sometimes it means asking one additional question that changes the way a component is designed. In this video, we share a real example involving a highly formed stamped metal component designed to operate under significant load for years. The original engineering was sound, but reviewing what happened to the material during forming revealed something worth reconsidering — before tooling was built. That is what Design for Manufacturability is really about. It isn’t finding fault. It’s finding opportunities. Getting an experienced manufacturing partner involved early can help identify potential issues while changes are still relatively easy to make — rather than after tooling is complete, thousands of parts have been manufactured, or products are already in the field. Talan Products is a Cleveland, Ohio manufacturer specializing in high-volume progressive die metal stamping, fabricated aluminum extrusions, and value-added manufacturing processes for OEM customers. As our CEO Steve Peplin likes to say: “At Talan, we’ve been partnering before partnering was cool.” If you’re developing a new stamped metal component, considering a redesign, or looking for another manufacturing perspective before committing to production tooling, we’d be glad to take a look. Because the best manufacturing problems are the ones that never happen. #DesignForManufacturability #DFM #MetalStamping #ProgressiveDieStamping #Manufacturing
