Martin Buber was an Israeli philosopher whose philosophy went on to make an impact on Martin Luther King Jr and his Letter from Birmingham Jail. In Buber's book, I and Thou, he outlines the two attitudes we have in the world in the form of the word pairs I-You and I-It. In the I-It world, we objectify people and things around us to meet a certain need. For example, we see an apple as simply a means for food and we see the cashier as simply a means to check out. This world isn't necessarily bad for Buber, after all we need it to live, but it's not the whole picture. In the I-You world, by contrast, we enter into a special relationship with the other person or thing. All of us is present and all of them is present. We cease to objectify.
