The Pushchair Up the Hill — Susan and Linda, Twin Girls This song comes from my own childhood memories of Chelsfield in Kent, where my twin sister Linda and I helped our mum care for our baby sister, Jennifer. I still remember the steam trains arriving at the station, their presence woven into the sounds of our days, and the effort of pushing our wide, four-wheeled pushchair to collect half a hundredweight of coke for the boiler. Without it, we had no hot water. We were poor in those days, and a kind neighbour from our old house, Jimmy Doors, gave our dear Mum a bag of coke free each week. That small act of kindness meant so much. At the post office, we collected Mum’s family allowance—seventeen shillings and sixpence—before calling at the Spar and the butcher’s. Along the way, we stopped to say hello to everyone we knew, part of the familiar rhythm of village life. We made that journey through sunshine, rain, frost and snow. Back home, there was warm milk, washing with the old gas boiler and wringer, and cloth nappies we hand-washed while standing on a kitchen chair. There were days spent polishing brass while Mum worked, planting potatoes behind Granddad Parish, and making cakes for Sunday tea. It was hard work, but there was time to play and laugh too. These are memories I treasure: the warmth of home, the kindness of neighbours, and Linda beside me as we shared those early years together. It was the best time of my Childhood, I learned that I didn't need all the wealth people seemed to be happy, we survived, our dear nan was there to Emma Lilly, she came every day and helped, Written by Susan Scotter Music and vocals created with Suno AI My Souly Whispers If this song brings back memories of your own childhood, I’d love you to share them in the comments.
