Welcome back to History for the Girlies, where the history is real, the women are complicated, and the gossip is several centuries old. 🍺🏰✨ This week, we’re talking about Eleanor of Aquitaine: Duchess in her own right, Queen of France, Queen of England, crusader, rebel, prisoner, and mother to some of the most famous, and chaotic, men of the Middle Ages. Born into one of the wealthiest and most powerful families in medieval Europe, Eleanor’s life was anything but quiet. She married Louis VII of France, travelled on the Second Crusade, had her marriage annulled, and then married the future Henry II of England just weeks later. And somehow, that was only the beginning. Because Eleanor would go on to build an enormous dynasty, become the mother of Richard the Lionheart and King John, support her sons in rebellion against their own father, spend years imprisoned by her husband, and eventually emerge to become one of the most politically important women of her generation. So grab your ale, pull up a chair, and settle in, because we’re heading back to the twelfth century to talk about the extraordinary, complicated and very long life of Eleanor of Aquitaine. Welcome to History for the Girlies, where women's history gets the gossip session it deserves. ✨ 🏰 This episode: Eleanor of Aquitaine 👑 Also known as: Duchess of Aquitaine, Queen of France, Queen of England, wife of Louis VII and Henry II, and mother of Richard the Lionheart and King John. 🍺 Best enjoyed with: your beverage of choice and an unreasonable amount of interest in medieval royal drama If you enjoyed this episode, please subscribe, like and leave a comment, especially if there's a woman from history you'd love us to gossip about next!
