Nerd Nite Kyushu is bringing new hot talks for another sweltering summer in Japan. Evan Kirby steps up to talk about how your brain is lying to itself about the world in "Your brain is a lying liar that lies" Intro We’ve all had the experience of being completely sure of a memory, only to find out we’ve actually completely misremembered what happened. Well, it turns out that the majority of what happens in your head is a controlled hallucination, as your brain takes a variety of cheap and easy shortcuts to predict a “good enough” simulation of the world. I’ll explore some of the ways that your brain lies to you about the world, your body, and even about your brain itself. My goal is for you to leave this talk with a newfound suspicion of every part of your daily life, and absolutely zero confidence. Bio I have been fascinated by how our brains work since I noticed at an early age how error-prone mine was. While I don’t have any formal training in neuroscience or neuropsychology, I have a keen layman’s interest in understanding the workings and failings of my own and other people’s minds, and am currently working on a “user’s manual for your brain” for children. I’m excited to present a summary of modern neuroscience understanding to you!
