The New ASEAN Cup is Already Falling Apart

Last October, Infantino announced a new tournament for South East Asia: the FIFA ASEAN Cup. Plenty were confused as there was already a major tournament for that region: the AFF ASEAN Championship. Fast forward to 2026 and more details have been released which include the invitation of China, Hong Kong, and India, as well as a division system similar to the UEFA Nations League. Now we are in August, just a few weeks away from the inaugural FIFA ASEAN Cup set to be hosted in Hong Kong and Indonesia and we have more questions than ever before. Why are Pakistan and Bangladesh in it? What do ASEAN countries gain from the tournament? Will it replace the AFF ASEAN Championship? Why does Indonesia support it? How much money is there to be won?
