What does it actually mean to follow Jesus? Not just to believe in Him, not just to attend church, but to truly follow Him with your whole life? Luke 5 gives us one of the most powerful and personal answers in all of Scripture through the story of Peter, a professional fisherman who encountered Jesus on an ordinary day and was never the same again.
Peter had fished all night and caught nothing. He was tired, experienced, and ready to go home. Then Jesus climbed into his boat, borrowed it as a teaching platform, and afterward told Peter to go back out into deep water and let down the nets. It made no sense professionally. But Peter obeyed, not because it was logical, but because Jesus said so. What happened next was not just a miracle. It was a revelation.
This message digs into what it looks like to move from giving Jesus access to giving Him authority. It explores the difference between a convenient faith and a surrendered one. It asks hard questions about the areas of life we hold back from God, the obedience we delay until it makes more sense, and the shame that keeps us hiding when what we actually need is to draw near.
Topics and themes covered include the calling of Peter in Luke 5, faith and obedience when God's instructions do not make sense, the holiness of Jesus and how it exposes our sinfulness, why guilt and shame should drive us toward God rather than away from Him, the true meaning of grace and how it redirects an entire life, the mission of the church and every believer's role in it, and practical steps for identifying where you have given Jesus access but not authority.
Whether you are new to faith, have been following Jesus for years, or are somewhere in the middle trying to figure out what genuine discipleship looks like, this message meets you where you are. Peter did not have it all figured out when he stepped out of that boat. He was impulsive, stubborn, and would later deny Jesus three times. But Jesus called him anyway, knowing exactly what grace would make him become. He calls you the same way.
